Today, Santa reveals the uncomfortable truth that "agile" is not a silver bullet:
🎄 There is no unifying theory of agile
🎄 Be transparent with your peers what agile will solve
🎄 More importantly be transparent about what "agile" DOESN'T solve
🎄 Never look at agile as the silver bullet
So I have some bad news for you. It's very very sad. We've run out of silver bullets. We've searched everywhere we can but we can't find any. We looked at every framework we could find and sadly we couldn't find the universal solution to the universe's all the problems. There is no unifying theory of agile. So you're going to have to make choices, and you have to be transparent, and say okay if we adopt this framework these are the issues that will help us with and these are the issues we want. In the past I go into organization and they look at agile as the Silver Bullet. It's going to solve all our problems. It's going to solve our HR problems. It's going to solve our scoping problems, our budget problems, our air conditioning problems, the fact that it rains on the wrong Tuesday in October, it's going to solve all of these problems. So I'm sad to say it's not. I know many of you know that but I think it's really important to make sure that conversation is there. It's very clear here are the problems we're going to solve. So just be transparent when you're dealing with your peers, when you're dealing with your leaders. This is where agile can help you this is where it can't, and then life will be much better because then you can do something else about those things. If everyone just assumes agile is going to fix it and they're not, two things will happen. The worst thing they're not fixed, the second worst thing is people get frustrated with agile, because they thought it was going to fix it. So you lose twice, the problem is not solved, and everyone thinks agile is crap because it doesn't solve the problem it cannot solve. Even at Christmas I can't do that, so just let's be clear about what agile can and can't do and be transparent.
Agile Santa has agreed to exclusively present his wisdom and advice with humor to all agilists in the world this year via piplanning.io.
