Agile Santa Claus

Even Santa knows that digital devices are fantastic. But he has some important advice about them:

🎄 Communication is always on

🎄 You need to separate time for business and private life

🎄 Turn notifications off and schedule time for reading messages

🎄 Escaping from always-on culture helps to avoid burnout

It's been a tough year or two years or three years, I think it feels like eternity in the pandemic and all these cool digital tools and we talked to have come along and it's made communication in some cases transactional, but what it's also done is make communication always on. I get messages at three o'clock in the morning from colleagues on the other side of the world. Now digital tools are fantastic. So I can get these messages on my phone at three o'clock in the morning, yay. So make sure you have space. I'm now migrating so I have a Santa phone and I have a different phone, on which are not Sentry things for like when I take the red hat off and relax and I can be, you know, the family time. Make sure you separate those things so you don't have constant interruptions all the time and one thing that you might also want to consider is looking at the interactions or interruptions you get during the day as well. Ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ping ding ding lights flashing everywhere and you think it's the police but it's not it's people asking you if you want to have lunch or something, but all of these things. Turn notifications off and then maybe scheduling half an hour in the morning to look at the messages so I don't mean all the notifications maybe the notifications for the things that aren't crucial that you respond to. I mean Mrs Claus, hey my yoga instant response on that one. So look at how in this Digital World you interact with the things that are around you and look at as an agilist how your teams are doing it. You don't want them to burn out. They need some reset time and that time away from the office. So maybe have two phones, maybe turn notifications off whatever it is, make sure you escape the always-on culture because that is the path to burnout and we don't want anyone to burn out. We want them to have joy in their job and joy in their life.
