Today's Agile Santa advice is that you should be aware that "ego is the enemy"
🎄 Separate your ego from the conversation
🎄 Think of the problem as an independent thing
🎄 Something that has nothing to do with you
🎄 It's about the situation, the context, the problem to solve
Another little tip or a little idea that another elf shared with me is: ego is the enemy. There is a great book on that. You can look it up and read about. I'm not doing a book review. But it's very important that as many conversations as you can, you separate your ego from the conversation. If it's good feedback or bad feedback, it's not personal. It's about the situation, it's about the context, it's about the problem. Focus on finding a solution. Focus on trying to find a way forward. The only way you'll do that is if you take away the ego element. If you're able to create enough distance between you and the problem that it's not personal. If something goes wrong, even if you, for some reason, had something to do with what happened. This is not about you as a person this is about an action and the best way forward will be to look at the action as if it's an independent thing. And then sit down with your peers and say "okay how do we solve this problem" and treat the problem, as I said, as something that's separate from you as a person as an individual. It's not easy. I find it hard when people criticize my toys, when people break my toys I get very upset. The elves spend a lot of time on those toys and they get very frustrated. However that's an opportunity for us to understand where the strengths and weaknesses of our toys are so we can make better toys next year. So in some ways having problems is a gift. The gift that helps us improve. And as you're all agilists you're always wanting to improve. So when you're sitting down and you're looking at problems, the problem is what we want to look at. Not you, not your ideas, not your friends, we don't want to blame anyone. So look at the problem and learn from the problem, that will help you make have a great 2023 because it'll make it faster for you to do the Relentless Improvement that we all seek in the agile world.
Agile Santa has agreed to exclusively present his wisdom and advice with humor to all agilists in the world this year via piplanning.io.
